Earvin “Magic” Johnson has become the most powerful African-American businessman in the world. He is a Major League BaseballMagic owner, an NBA Legend, a two-time Hall of Famer, an Entrepreneur, a Philanthropist and a Motivational Speaker. The business mogul has successfully parlayed his skills and tenacity on the court into the business world, propelling his company to the status of #1 Brand in Urban America.  

He is Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE), which provides high quality products and services that focus primarily on ethnically diverse and underserved urban communities through strategic alliances, investments, consulting and endorsements. The conglomerate is comprised of multiple business entities and partnerships that include Canyon Johnson, a $1 billion dollar real estate fund, Yucaipa Johnson, a $500 million dollar private equity fund, ASPIRE, an African-American television network, SodexoMAGIC, a food service and facilities management company, Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies, a high school drop-out prevention program, Clear Health Alliance, a healthcare provider with a specialty plan for HIV/AIDS patients, Magic Airport Holdings including Magic Johnson Sports, and Inner City Broadcasting Corporation.  

Most noted for his unprecedented Starbucks partnership, which served as the catalyst for redevelopment in urban communities and is literally the blueprint for Corporate America’s engagement and success with urban consumers. In 2010, the savvy businessman divested his Starbucks, and Los Angeles Lakers shares in excess of $100 million dollars.  

Mr. Johnson has also teamed up with Tim Leiweke of AEG in an effort to build a new stadium and bring an NFL team back to Los Angeles as well as thousands of jobs to the city. The story of Mr. Johnson and Larry Bird’s inspiring friendship and rivalry was presented in a theater adaptation of “Magic & Bird” on Broadway in April 2012.
 
Mr. Johnson also serves as Chairman and Founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation, where his unwavering commitment to transform Urban America continues through HIV/AIDS Awareness & Prevention Programs, Community Empowerment Centers, and the Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program. Celebrating over 20 years of success, the Magic Johnson Foundation has become one of the most recognizable philanthropic organizations around the world.

NAPSLO Technology Program - E&S Joint Working Group Update

NAPSLO helped establish the E&S Joint Working Group with the Independent Agents & Brokers of America’s Agents Council for Technology (ACT), ACORD and the AAMGA on a joint initiative to improve the efficiencies for Retail Agent interacting with managing General Agents and wholesale brokers in the Excess & Surplus market in order to promote the electronic exchange of data between the partners.

Find out more on the initiatives and success of the Working Group on its area of influence during this technology program. The Working Group has focused on E&S Carrier supplemental applications to streamline nonstandard data requirements and move the industry to utilize ACORD standards and applications as much as possible; data transmission streams to/from RA systems to/from GA systems with emphasis on automating the flow of data; and joint development of global standards for the Lloyd's and U.S. market.

Georgia Surplus Lines Association and NAPSLO’s Next Generation are partnering to bring together a Sunday program for college students interested in the surplus lines industry and young professionals just beginning their career in surplus lines insurance. The first part of the program will consist of two sessions aimed at each group, followed by a cocktail reception with c-level officers from the industry.

You are invited to take part in NAPSLO’s interactive continuing education program on Errors and Omissions. Do not miss out on this tremendous opportunity to meet and listen to Elizabeth Campbell, an attorney with Locke Lord, a leading law firm that represents agents, brokers, and carriers in E&O cases country-wide. Elizabeth will teach you why you should pay attention to E&O and what are the classic actions that can result in E&O claims.

Students interested an insurance industry are invited to attend a workshop crafted to give attendees the inside line on how to secure a career in the surplus lines industry. Leading industry experts will be cover resume building, job search skills for college students, finding an internship career issues for students and how to overcome them successfully interviewing for a surplus lines career.

Following the workshop, join us for a cocktail reception to meet and mingle with fellow seminar attendees as well as some of the top industry executives from around the country!
